Collective action: Democracy under attack
Dear readers,
Today, Democracy is under attack and EU action is overdue! Last week, in the framework of the EU Colloquium on Fundamental Rights, CONCORD signed a joint statement, together with 14 other organisations, calling on EU leaders to stand up for Democracy. The statement was handled to the Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, ahead of the Colloquium. Watch his answer in this live streaming.
Next to this crucial call-to-action, CONCORD compiled below several important events for this week being the EU Disability and Development Week as well as the Lifelong Learning Week. Enjoy!

CONCORD's NEWS OF THE MONTH
The EU Common Agricultural Policy
The current Common Agricultural Policy is going under a reform proposal for 2020-2027. With its new paper, CONCORD, together with partners from Local dairy Campaign, West Africa, has gathered recommendations on how the EU can and should integrate PCSD into the proposal.
Ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council of 26 November during which the future EU budget was discussed, CONCORD and Eurodad raised concerns about the private sector instruments of the external budget, namely the EFSD+ and the External Action Guarantee.
What is GDP? And why should we go beyond economic growth? CONCORD advocates for genuine measures of progress focusing on people and planet. To know more about that initiative and what researchers, politicians, and other stakeholders think about what progress can mean, have a look at our new dedicated webpage.
The European Disability and Development Week is held between the 3rd of December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and the 10th of December, the Human Rights Day. During this week, members and partners of the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC) (some of them being members of CONCORD) are organising different events within a unique programme, under the theme "Together for Inclusion – Leave No One Behind". In addition, a photograph contest is organised on the #EDDW18 theme.
This WIDE publication discusses issues around gender and migration in Europe, with a special focus on challenges in Spain, Austria, Poland, Belgium and Sweden. The publication is the result of a two years project supported through the Erasmus+ programme of the EU, and it is meant to serve as a resource for adult educators and the interested public.
Last week, Isabelle Brachet, ActionAid's EU Policy Advisor, published an article about finance tools in future EU budget. In the context where fierce negotiations are taking place, she puts the main focus on the idea that the EU budget for developing countries should be about tackling poverty in the poorest countries, not making profit for the richest. Besides, she points out how the support of private companies will be one of the main stumbling blocks in those discussions.
On World Toilet Day, 19 November, the Foreign Affairs Council of the EU adopted Conclusions on Water Diplomacy, strengthening European commitment to the use of diplomacy in resolving conflicts over shared water resources for the sake of cooperation, regional stability and peace. These updated Conclusions acknowledge the global shifts in water diplomacy since 2013: the inclusion of access to safe water and decent sanitation and hygiene as a SDG; and the role in climate change mitigation.
Join this visionary call to action for a radically different Europe, detailed across over 100 policy proposals to be pursued by progressive forces during the next term from 2019 to 2024, and embedded in a radically different approach to European governance built on a new Sustainable Development Pact!
Kepa and the Finnish NGDO Platform to the European Union, Kehys, have formed a new umbrella organisation: Finnish Development NGOs– Fingo. Fingo functions as an umbrella organisation of 300 member organisations working in the areas of development cooperation and global education.
